The Design Review Board will hold a second public hearing on a proposal to relocate the Exploratorium from the Palace of Fine Arts in the City and County of San Francisco to Piers 15 and 17 at the San Francisco waterfront. The proposed project site is located near the intersection of Green Street and the Embarcadero Promenade, between Piers 9 and 19 in the City and County of San Francisco. The proposed project would involve repair, renovation and seismic upgrades to the Pier 15 substructure, shed and bulkhead building to house the Exploratorium, removal of a portion of the paved parking area between Piers 15 and 17 known as the “valley” and an existing office shack to create an open water area and “courtyard”, and the removal of an existing connector building at the east end of the valley and the construction of a new “bridge building” in its place. The proposed public access includes an approximately 61,596-square-foot-area within the “courtyard” and along the south and east pier aprons, an approximately 3,406-square-foot “open air gallery” at the northwestern corner of the Pier 15 shed, and a component of the Bayside History Walk to showcase the internal structure of the pier shed either within the Exploratorium entrance at the Pier 15 bulkhead or within the main visitor entry to the Exploratorium fronting the valley. This second public hearing on the project will focus primarily on the proposed curb pull-outs along the Embarcadero and bus drop-off area for school children.
