    (Karen Wolowicz) [415/352-3669]
The Design Review Board will hold a public hearing on a proposal for a new bridge over Lake Merritt Channel located at the site of the existing Lake Merritt Channel Bridge on Embarcadero East about 100 feet from the mouth of the channel, at the Oakland/ Alameda Estuary, in the City of Oakland, Alameda County. The project includes demolition of the existing two-lane bridge and the construction of a new 31,779-square-foot two-lane bridge. Proposed new public access at the site includes, but is not limited to, two six-foot-wide bicycle lanes adjacent to the east bound and west bound traffic lanes, a five-foot-wide sidewalk on the north side of the bridge, a twelve-foot-wide multi-use path with belvederes on the south side of the bridge, and a new disabled accessible restroom on the southwest side of the bridge. Construction of the proposed bridge is expected to commence in July 2008 and would last at least 12 months. The roadway in the vicinity of the bridge, and the bridge itself, would be closed during the construction period and traffic would be detoured around the project area.
