August 5, 2010 Commission Meeting Summary

Twenty-two members attended the meeting, which was held at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

Because both Chair Sean Randolph and Vice Chair Anne Halsted were out of the country, the Commission elected Larry Goldzband to serve as acting chair and preside over the meeting.

The Commission concurred in the chair’s appointment of Joe LaClair to serve as BCDC’s representative on the newly-established Delta Conservancy and Jessica Hamburger to serve as Joe’s alternate. For details, contact Will Travis (415/352-3653 travis@bcdc.ca.gov).

The Commission held a public hearing and voted (21-0-0) to approve a stipulated agreement to resolve an enforcement problem at the San Pedro Cove community in San Rafael. For details, contact Tim Eichenberg (415/352-3655 time@bcdc.ca.gov).

The Commission voted (21-0-0) to approve a contract under which Solano County will provide BCDC with funding to assist the County and consider proposed amendments of the plans and programs dealing with the Suisun Marsh. For details, contact Joe LaClair (415/352-3656 joel@bcdc.ca.gov).

The Commission received a briefing from representatives of the City of Hayward, the East Bay Regional Park District, and the consulting firm of PWA on the planning that is underway to deal with sea level rise along the Hayward shoreline. For details, contact Sara Polgar (415/352-3654 sarap@bcdc.ca.gov).

The Commission received a briefing from Dr. Andrew Cohen, who has investigated the possible causes of the demise of the reportedly abundant native oyster population that existed in the Bay during the mid-1800s. Dr. Cohen believes that the Bay native oyster population 150 years ago was, in fact, relatively small. He, therefore, questions the appropriateness of policies and programs aimed at restoring native oysters. For details, contact Will Travis (415/352-3653 travis@bcdc.ca.gov).

The Commission received a briefing on the progress being made in implementing BCDC’s strategic plan and revised one of the objectives in the plan. For details, contact Will Travis (415/352-3653 travis@bcdc.ca.gov).

The Commission unanimously adopted a resolution of appreciation for Caitlin Sweeney who is resigning as the Commission’s chief deputy director, effective September 1, 2010. For details, contact Will Travis (415/352-3653 travis@bcdc.ca.gov).
